Bcastle,
Back in my younger days I used to put in a big garden (1/4 acre). One year I grew over 100 tomato plants, lots of different varieties..
We ate and canned all we needed and then still gave away lots.
Now days I keep it fairly small and simple. I have 3 raised beds 5' wide and 40' long.
I break them up with a broad foark and hoe (the old fashoned way) which gets me some good exercise each spring. Last spring was the first year I put any gypsum on my beds and that really helped. Loosened up the soil nicely and made it a lot easier to break up with that broadfork.
After my plants get big enough and the soil warms up good I hoe them well and then put down a nice bed of wheat straw after that. I do put in soaker hoses at the base of the plants before bedding with straw. Once you get to that point, Like I am now there with the squash and tomatoes, all you have to do is water em occasionally (if it don't rain), and pick and eat. I just mow around the raised beds and the straw takes care of the weeds and keeps the soil from drying out.
I grow just enough for us to eat now days and may have a little left over to give to close family or friends.
I have found that the older I get, the smaller my garden gets
I still enjoy it just as much, just not willing and able to work as hard at it as I used to.
