TOPIC: Other stuff growing...

Re:Other stuff growing... 12 years 3 months ago #18536

Well...

I ended up getting 7 decent watermelons off that little patch, and 20 cantelope.

Been eating so much melon here lately - about tired of em.

I canned another batch of tomatoes this past weekend.

Other than tomatoes, not much left in the garden now except a few more watermelons, and cukes and tomatoes will keep making for a good while longer.

When the garden starts winding up, it will not be too long until Ginseng harvest begins.

As one season ends... anothers on the way.

Nice watermelons TN,
I planted some watermelon seed in early May. Only have them at the flowering stage at this point thou. Not sure if they will produce nice size watermelons like yours or not. I have 13 tomatoes plants full of green tomatoes, some yellow squash, cucumbers, zucchini, various peppers and broccoli that grew nicely but didn't produce very nice broccoli heads due to the drought and heat. We watered a lot thou. Overall it looks like the tomatoes enjoyed the heat the most.

Boy oh Boy TNHunter these tomatoes look good. I can't wait to can some myself. That doesn't usually happen until August. I love canned tomatoes about as much as a kid loves Ice cream!

Nice job CarlM.

TN, that one watermelon is camouflage and is shaped like a hunting boot.

Thanks Latt! So far this year we have canned 24 pints and 4 quarts of bread and butter pickles, 33 half-pints of Red Raspberry Jam and 30 jars of green beans. I only have about 50 quarts of tomatoes to go!

Wow that's a lot of canning. My wife and I picked some nice large large raspberries from a u-pick farm and froze them. You must have found a great wild patch to can 33 half pints. Our wild raspberries were small this year due to the drought. Going to have a bunch of tomatoes thou.

Actually a farm near where I work had a sign offering picked raspberries for sale. I bought 12 pints as the u-pick farm we usually go to got devastated by flooding from Hurricane Irene last year. I didn't expect them to have much this year and they really didn't. I will go back there next year. I was hoping for a banner crop of Blackberries this year, but the drought did them in real bad. I have tons of them behind my work and I had picked them the last few years but I doubt I get anything this year. That's why I do can so much of the stuff just in case the next year is a down year.

CarlM - nice looking green beans.

Man I love those too.

Others - thanks for the good comments.

It has been a good year so far... thinking back on it all.. I have had lots of good stuff from the garden and wild this year.

Sort of putting them in order of harvest:

Morel Mushroom, Lettuce, Snow Peas, Cukes, Yellow and Green Squash, Small-Mouth Bass & Black Perch, Plums, Potatoes, Tomatoes, Peaches, Black Berries, Sweet Corn, Cantelop, Watermelon.

Yum Yum !
