One more from what I suspect was just a bad batch of seeds...

Not much happening there :-(

I will have to replant those this fall with more seed.

Nice!!!

Now that's what you've been waiting for! After all the hard work, Let the Fun begin.

I figured they should be up shortly after your Seed Bed roots came up.

Congrats!

On those 4 beds where I had really poor germination I know it was not the location because just about 10' away here is what it looks like in another bed (different seed source).

Now that's more like it.

One last pic from this morning.

Just a few steps away from that last bed - there is a spot where I showed a little 2 prong (by some maidenhair fern) in my first youtube video and here is what that little 2 prong looks like this year.

Couple more years I may harvest that one.

Classicfur,

On the hard work part...

I don't deer hunt anymore so after seng hunting is over there is really just not much going on for me that gives me any good exercise during the late fall, winter or early spring months.

I do Turkey hunt and fish so late March/April I start getting out and about more.

Now that I am growing some wild simulated seng - at least I have something to do in that late fall thru early spring period to give my old body a good workout now and then.

With the weather here in Middle TN - as you saw this winter I can plant just about that whole time except for a few weeks in January or early Feb.

There is a little work to it, all of that raking and scattering seeds and walking those hillsides - but heck some folks pay to go to gym to get a good workout like that.

Me - I am getting a free workout - and investing in my future to and having some fun while at it and enjoying the great outdoors and no doubt helping my overall health out too.

And - yeah - like you said it's nice to see the results in the spring like this.

I like what you'd said there.

Great to see the babe's coming up there.

I can't wait to get up there this weekend to check on thigs there. I'll be very happy to see more up that last weekend.

Your right, it's far better to \"work out\" in the Great Outdoors than at a gym. Working in the woods is the way to go.

For me, most of our summer months are spent in the woods cutting and splitting firewood to heat our home and my shop for six months in the winter. So I get plenty of exercise from that. But winter months are a different story. I try to get out Snow shoeing through the woods atleast four times a week. That keeps me from getting Cabin Fever! And I've succeeded in getting the kids out snow shoeing also. Keeps them from becoming Lazy. I tell them it's good for their bodies. They don't believe me.

The fun part is walking through the woods with all the seng up and growing.

Like my wife alway says: Pray hard, work hard, go to heaven tired. Sounds good to me! :)

Glad that most of your seng beds were a success.

Tnhunter, Nice looking ginseng beds- glad they are doing good. I got some bad seeds this spring too. I might have 10 plants out of a half pound of seeds.
I bought 2 pounds of seeds from a shade grower last fall and they came up really good( Barry Anker) 45 dollars a pound. I also had good germination with Scott Persons seeds(three years in a row now).

I am hoping this will be the last year I buy seeds. I got close to 6 pounds off of my own plants this past fall. I am going to try to plant 20-30 pounds this fall, so I might buy some more from Barry Anker because they are cheaper.

Lenno,

I am with you on the cheaper seeds... at least on successfully germinating and making some nice little 3 leafers.

The cheapest seed I bought from hardwoodginseng did really well and so did the seed I got here from wildgrown.

It was the most expensive seed I bought (Hardings) that did poorly.

It could have just been one bad batch out of lots of good batches Hardings produced last year but one bad experience with a seed source (especially a expensive one) will make it hard to go back there for more.

I got a pound from Hardings and split it with a friend so I only planted 1/2 pound of it (4 beds) and they all did about the same. I would say less than 1% germinated and produced seedlings.

Who knows next year it could be a different seed source that turns out bad. Never know about that so it is probably best to buy your seeds from at least 2-3 sources each year and not put too much faith in any of them.

Good Luck to you all !

I agree with all of you guys. I feel the same way.

There must have been a boat load of green seed hit the market this year. I have never heard of so many different people experiencing such a problem with germination. Seed price was high and I bet some took advantage of this and advertently or inadvertently sold green seed to fill demand at a high price.

Just a green seed theory and I have no proof of this.

However, when seed does not float and it is nice and white inside, it is not dead or diseased. Therefore it should grow if it is stratified and planted correctly.

I think I may have some green seed as well. I planted a test spot and everything about this spot is perfect. Only a small % is up, The seed that is not up is still solid and the interior of the seed is nice and white and healthy looking but it just is not coming up yet.

I have yet to visit the land that I planted the first 10 lbs in that were bought from Hardings and Hardwood ginseng co. I am sure I will be pleased as I have always had great germination.
