TOPIC: moss question

moss question 10 years 8 months ago #27634

Whenever you fellows see this type of moss, would you think that this area is too shady for ginseng? (hopefully my photo uploads correctly)

Never mind it didn't work.

This is called clubmoss I believe. I find it often in woods with seng growing in it. Find a lot of Morel mushrooms around this too. Not sure if there is any reason for that or just a coincidence.

Thanks Latt for the identification. That moss seems to grow in large mats, sometimes fairly thick. I didn't know whether ginseng would grow in the middle of that, and I'm glad to hear that it might.

I usually do collect at least a dozen or so morels each spring in that area. That's about the only mushroom I can confidently identify. I've also got some what I think are Reishi mushrooms growing on some dead hemlocks, but I don't think I'll have any use for them.

Are the Reishi shiny on top like they have been varnished ? please let me know.

I'll take a picture next time I have a chance to go out there. They are kind of red in color and fairly smooth on the top from what I recall.

OK great. Let me know. If you want to post a pic and they are Reishi perhaps you can send them to me. I will pay postage and something for your efforts. I want them for my own personal use.
Thanks,
Latt

Wait... when you are saying \"moss\" are your referring to the stuff that stays evergreen, or the moss-like looking thing in the upper right middle of the photo? I thought the evergreen looking stuff was some sort of ground juniper....

That is a Lycopodium species, more commonly called ground pine, or ground cedar because of the cedar like leaves. The spores/pollen from the flower stalk are highly flammable and are collected and sold as emergency fire starters. The greens are also considered a non-timber forest product and can be sold into the floral industry like ferns and other greenery.

Generally when you see this it is an indicator of disturbed, nutrient poor, or old field soils. Generally speaking it doesn't grow in good ginseng sites. I have planted in areas with it, and in areas where I have removed it. The ginseng grows, but remains small, or fizzles out after a few years. But every spot is different, so the only way to know for sure would be to plant a little seed and see how it does over the next few seasons.

Yes, I have always thought it to be in the Lycopodium family also known as Club Mosses.
I believe we are talking about the same thing.
