Fungus in my Ginseng 11 years 7 months ago #22379

Hillhopper,

It is a good feeling to see them come back after suffering a hard year. I remember at the end of my first summer with wild simulated growing that a lot of mine went down in the July/Early August timeframe, and the next spring it sure was good to see a large majority of those back and looking good.

Hey ... I think it was Kduce that did this a couple years ago. He put up a post saying Fungus in my Ginseng but the fungus was not what you expected.

Today I went over to my brother in laws and looked for morels a little while and had no luck. I had by boy Cole with me and after we got back home we decided to go down to a wild sim bed that we planted together last fall and as we were walking down the hill \"boom\" there it was, a nice little blondish morel. The wild sim bed was looking good too.

So here you go... a Fungus in my Ginseng !

:-)

Here is what it looked like where it stood...

This hillside is spotted with poplars and hickorys, but mostly oak.

Found a nice patch of something comming up not far from one of my wild sim beds.

I am not sure what it is, but the leaves were quite unique - extremly fuzzy/hairy.

There was probably 30-40 of these in a tight group. Anyone know what this is ?

TN,

Thanks for showing those pictures. My first thought about the green plant that you have a question about is that it looks like Eastern Skunk Cabbage, but it may be something else.
What I really wanted to comment about was the picture that has all the young three leafers in it. I have been watching my plants at the house closely for several days and I have been astonished at the number of three leafers coming up. Hundreds of them! I did not plant any this past year?? This has to be the results of planting year before last and seeing the effects of \"Delayed Dormancy\". I had placed my seeds in my refrigerator and I felt like they may have gotten too cold. I commented in a post about how strange the emergence was the next Spring, with some sections that looked great and all of a sudden, almost nothing. It seemed that when I first received my seeds that the first planting would look good and after that, not good at all. I'm almost positive that what I am seeing now is where the seed survived from the year before and decided to come up the next year. I'm going to try to make a video or take pictures in a few days and just show what is happening. I think the watering I did last year kept the forest floor wet enough to help the seed survive for two seasons. I'm sure as hot as it was this past Summer, they would not have made it without the help that irrigating gave them.

Hugh,

A couple of years ago I got some bad seed late in the year (Jan) and planted it and the next spring only like 1-2% germinated and then the following spring something like 2-3% germinated... and that was it. It was from a well known seed producer but it really just did not work out.

That has me a little skiddish of buying seed too late in the season and planting past about Christmas time.

This year I did all my planting of bought seed over my Thanksgiving break and then Christmas break. So far every bed I have checked are showing excellent germination rates. I would say in the 75-80% range or better.

And no doubt on the second year in those beds several more will come up as first year 3 leafers and just not come up this spring.

In every one of my 2 year old beds, there are always a few first year 3 leafers up, that for some reason just did not come up the first spring.

Latt... man that Lambs ear looks close but not sure that is it. It looks even harier than what I found.

Thanks

Tn that favors and may be what we call Candle stick - true plant name is Mullein yet I am not 100 o/o sure it is small and seems a little lighter in color than Mullein

However if it develops the candlestick look as in this photo then it is Mullein

Thanks Billy...

I will keep an eye on that plant thru the year since it is just up the hill a bit from one of my seng beds. Will see how it developes over time.
