TOPIC: Seng Emergence in Maine

In the first photo with a single 3 prong is five years old. The second photo with a single 3 prong is four years old.

Although I do have a few three year olds with 3 prongs. And even the four and five year olds still have alot that are just 2 prongs.

My Avatar to the left was a two yr old 3 prong. In it's third year it was a 2 prong. And in it's fourth year it turned back to being a 3 prong.

These plants are so un-predictable.

Thanks,

I am soooo looking forward to getting some older plants like you have.

Classic, My wife said, \"oh, nice plants, where is he from?\" I told her Maine and she just about started crying! My son goes to college up there at UNE, and he decided to stay there this summer, take a couple classes and work. She's going nuts, her baby isn't coming home any more.

Yes we sure have late emergence, especially compared to the rest of the states. Our winter seemed real mild this year with the snow gone in the middle of March. But the cool temps hung in there. The earliest I've seen the plants emerge is the last week in April. But normally it's usually around May 10-20th. It's hard for me to hear of everyones plants emerging for atleast a month and a half before mine.

I know when I first started planting seeds, it seemed like it would take forever to see plants with berries on them. Yet now it's finally happened.

Hang in there and don't give up and you will see your plants get bigger and more mature. your off to a good start.

As far as I know, our state still allows visitors to visit from Vermont. So you and your wife can come visit your son since the boy won't come home.

Thanks for the comments.

I live in Upstate NY and my seedlings didn't start emerging till around two weeks ago. I'm new to this and was wondering how long it takes before you can confidentily say that everything that is going to come up has? I ask this because less than 25% of my seedling are up right now. The sections of my beds that get more sunlight in the morning have a higher emergence than the shadier parts. It was a beutiful sunny weekend but last Friday when I left for work the truck said 33 degrees and there was a mild frost out. Should I be worried that whats up is what I got or are more on the way. I planted seeds rake and scatter an inch deep and the seeds are from the same supplier you buy from. Thanks for any comments.

The seedlings usually emerge over a period of three weeks. Sometimes four weeks.

They start emerging slowly at first and then they pick up speed after a 10 days or so. I have found that some beds have cooler soil and are a little slower to emerge.

Some years they emerge over a six week period. I also found that some batches of seeds will have some emerge in the second spring.

Because I'm so far north, the seng seems to grow betteron the SE to SW slopes. The north or NE slopes get to much shade.

By the way, Back in 1982 I went to Taxidermy School in Ogdensburg on the Saint Lawrence River.

Give it a little more time.

Good Luck!

Fellows,
I don't know how typical this is but, I have had seedlings emerging this year in East Tenn. for two months. I looked at my beds at the house yesterday and Saturday. There are more emerging each time that I look them over. I don't ever remember this happening before for this long of a period of time. It was so different from a month ago to see beds with hardly anything showing and now they look half way decent. Strange season, but I'll take it???:S

Sangfever- that's about how long it takes here in NC for full emergance as well, as least that's my expereince.... However I've only been doing this - into my 2nd full year.

Classicfur-

I forgot to mention this in my first post but your sang and pics look great. Thanks for sharing.

Glad to hear that a full emergence could take up to six weeks. This is the start of the third week for mine and the weather is just settling into a nicer pattern. Late April and early May were cold and damp and I kinda thought that might slow them down a bit. All this talk on refrigerating seed had me very concerned. I was slowly convincing myself that I had delayed my emergence to next spring. Most of the seed I bought last year was refrigerated for 5-7 days. Well I'll continue to hope for 75% or better.

I live a good bit from Ogdensburg but it is a neat little town. I've caught some slammer walleye on the St. lawerance near there.

I checked on three beds that are in a new area yesterday. I found just a few seedlings emerged in each bed. These beds are starting to emerge about 10 days later than the rest of what I planted last fall.

Also, that cooler weather you had in late April and early May, really slows them down. I had the exact same weather here in Maine. My older plants sarted to emerge during this period and it took them forever to straighten out and open their leaves. Then we had the warmer weather that we are having now and everything picked up speed. I hope this brings the rest of the seedlings into emergence.

Good Luck!

Hugh

That is a long period of time for seedlings to emerge.

But I've learned that this plant is sooo un-predictable that nothing surpises me anymore. New things I put in the catagory of \"Strange\".

Thanks,
