TOPIC: Red Berries

Red Berries 13 years 4 months ago #10842

Noticed some berries are starting to turn. Picture was taken July 13- date on camera needs changed. Most of my seed heads are still a ways off with most having green seeds and developing seeds on the same plant.

Lenno - love to see those red berries.

I have not seen any yet here, but now I have not checked my seed producing bed since last Friday.

Going to go and check em out and see if any are turning yet.

Looks like you just got a rain.

Will report back soon.

Checked all of the plants in my seed producing bed and no red showing up yet.

Some nice wads of big fat green berries though...

This was my first one to put on a berry, and it is still all green.

I did find something interesting today though.

One of the smaller 3 prongs in my seed producing bed, has a flower spike with just a small number of berries on now, but 3 of the berries are tri-lobed - going to have 3 seeds in each of those berries.

Don't think you see that all that often, and especially 3 on one flower spike.

Perhaps in another 10 years this one will be making 50 berries with 3 seeds in each berry (now that would be nice). Probably just dreaming there...

Looks like everyones is way ahead of mine.Of course I'm at 2000+ feet and 20 miles to the west of me everything grows 2 weeks ahead of everything here. It's Crazy but true. While the trees are in full leaf there the trees are still blooming and budding here.

I am sure that I am way ahead of some of you northern guys down here in Middle TN.

The past couple weeks we have had temps over 100 degrees on a few days and our rain has slowed down too.

I have a few young sourwood trees in the woods around the edge of my back yard and I noticed the first red leaves showing up this week.

Sourwoods usually start to show the first color around here (nice dark red color) and then poplars are not far behind with yellowing.

Our blackberries are about gone now, just a few left.

I lifted the burden on my peach tree limbs late yesterday evening, buckets full of nice and ripe tennessee peaches. We made several batches of peach jam and a cobler last night. Going to do more this morning, and freeze some for coblers later on and then give a bunch of peaches away - to family and friends.

My sweet corn is ready now too - picking that this morning and will be putting up corn today.

I still have lots of tomatoes coming, and they will keep producing into fall. And I have about 25-30 cantelope (hales best) and watermelons (charleston grey and crimson sweet) that will be ready in a few more weeks.

Yum - Thank the Good Lord for all his provisions.

It does not feel that much like fall yet - but with all of this garden stuff getting done, and some leaf color starting to show up (and now lenno with red berries) - well I know it's not too far off.

TNhunter,

Thats some nice looking peaches, ours didnt make this year. Some kind of fungus killed all the peaches on the tree the last two years.

Our corn is still a couple weeks away, couldnt get it planted until late May for all the rain.

Looks like you should have a lot of red berries soon.
