TOPIC: What deer repellant have you tried?

What deer repellant have you tried? 13 years 5 months ago #10431

Four Prong in the post on \"Voles\" indicated that there are ways he's tried to repell them. These amazing creatures are smart... and good to eat.

I'm going to hunt them soon, and hope that if I take the leaders of the herd, things will change in thep patch. For me, this is a natural way to attempt some controll. I was planning on leaving some body parts about like Four Prong does.

I've only read about the dried blood products. Please share your experience with this, if you have some. I know that Christmas tree farms used this stuff in great quanties, however the process that I read about that they use sounds pretty gooey and smelly.

any usable ideas out there?

Deer were traveling through my plantings until I started marking my territory everytime I entered them which is about every three days. I haven't found anymore signs since but I wouldn't think that would be feasible if you don't reside close to them. As my plantings get larger over the years it won't be feasible for me either....I can only drink so much coffee before I go and check em. :)

I am going to try the fishing line idea soon.
Deer Barriers on the Plants

\"Fishing Line Fence
Some folks have been very successful keeping deer out of a vulnerable area by rigging 30 pound test monofilament fishing line on stakes at about 2 feet off the ground. Deer usually move around at night, in the dark. They can?t see the fishing line, and thus bump up against it at about chest high which scares the living daylights out of them. Ideally, the fishing line should be strung fairly tightly so it does not give too much when touched by the deer.\"

Not sure if it's going to work but it's a cheap remedy if it works.I am sure you could use trees instead of wooden stakes to wrap the line around to encircle the ginseng bed.

I wonder about the effective legnth of time for the fishing line fence. It sounds like a good idea, tho. Deer vision is soooo much better than ours, so I would think that they would see the line in daylight hours.

I heard about a solar panel charged electric fence that is used by a neighbor to keep out deer. this woman has lots of flower bulbs in a really nice garden behind her house. It's next to her veggie garden. The claim was that without this electric fence the deer make a salad bar out of her flowers. I have seen deer in her veggie garden in the dawn hours, however no deer in her flowers. the fence hsd small yellow tags built in to the fence, and comes in a long roll. the solar panel isn't a large one, just enough to do the job required.

However since we would be using the fence in a shaded area, would the solar panel get enough sun to do what we want it to do?

If this stuff really worked you could surround the perimeter of an acre with just over 8 rolls. So 8 rolls at $18 bucks of $144 bucks.
Thanks,

When I need to keep deer out of an area, I just use a 12v battery operated electric fence. I run positive and negative about six inches apart with four hot lines. The lowest about ten inches off the ground to keep them from scooting under. I put the top line pair about five or six feet. At first, especially if there is a trail running through my fence, I double up some heavy foil over the line and sandwich some peanut butter between. One lick and they will not go back that way for awhile.

Combine that with keeping succulent vegitation out (like jewelweed) and places to hide (thick brush) and they will decide to go around rather than through most of the time.
