Thanks guys. I won't be getting out much more this fall. I've only got permision to check out a couple other spots and they really don't look all that promising. Both are on west facing slopes. Now I've had some luck in my life with those western slopes, but I think even if it was there it might already be all burnt up. It was pretty dry around here toward the end of summer.
That spot I was digging today has incredible potential. There are a lot of juvenile plants in there. Even though the owner told me that nobody had ever asked to dig back in there it was very obvious to me that someone had been there in the last few years. There were groups of one and two stemmers and maybe a small three and just nothing up the hill from them. I saw this numerous times down the side of that slope. If it's left alone it should be awesome in 5-10 years. I always like to leave some mature plants up high on the slope and even though I didn't find a lot of big mature threes I did manage to find and leave a couple up high. God willing and if my health permits it I'm planning on going back in about 5 years to take a look :)

I agree 5 I like to leave some mature plants for natural seeding while im away from an area plus a nice 4 prong will become a great four prong 5 years later thats a A+ in my thoughts and worthy of our patience.

I just returned home from taking my daughter on a squirrel hunting trip that went terribly wrong. I saved a few roots from Fridays hunt that I wanted to put by a small patch that I just started last fall. Last year I transplanted 4 roots from small 3 prongs. They all came up this past spring and seemed like they did pretty good at this location. A couple of weeks ago I added 10 more roots from small plants. After Fridays hunt I decided that the place needed a few larger plants so I thought I'd stick them in the ground before we really got started squirrel hunting, so that's what I did.
After getting them planted we went to the back side of the property to track down the squirrels. Now we saw a couple, but just couldn't get them lined up in the sights. That's when things got totaly off track. My daughter says \"dad look at that\". There on the bank in front of me is a real nice 3 prong. Now guys this is an area that I just wasn't going to dig this fall. In fact I came to this spot back in august to plant berries and pinch off tops, but really couldn't do much because most of the berries were still green.
I just didn't have the heart to tell her she couldn't dig any, so I explained to her that we could only dig a few of the larger plants. We spent about 2 hours just walking around talking about good stewardship, pinching off tops and she dug 6 real nice 3-prongs. We did get back to trying to squirrel hunt, but it just seemed like nothing was moving about this afternoon.
This first pic is her bouquet of seng tops she dug or pinched off. lol

One last pic of her with another nice top. All 6 of the plants she dug were about this size, and we left several more that were about the same.
