classicfur, very nice pictures. thanks for taking the time to share them.
I still have yet to see a plant as old as those in real life, and I am wondering.. what are those white fibrous things standing at attention on the leaves of the picture at the top of this page? Are those hairs, or some type of fungus? the small plant at bottom left (out of focus) seems to have some kind of white stingy fungus on it? or would that be slug residue? Looks like you got to them after a rain storm.

Thanks for the help in figuring out what you got there..
As I have not gotten to know these plants on an intimate level just yet. ^_^

Those are little hairs on the leaves. You have to under stand that pics are magnafied about 1.5 - 2 times bigger than the actual size of the plants.

You mentioned the white on the out of focus plant. Well I had to run back into my woods just now, so I could make sure that I did'nt have someting bad going on. Well it must have been some reflection off the wet leaves that caused it to look that way, because the leaves have no signs of anything going on.

In the seven years of growing I have not had any plants that showed sign of disease. Except for some seedling that did not emerge from Damping Off(pre-emergent) disease. But I'm sure someday I will have to deal with diseased plants.

I do have alot of slugs, but for the last three seasons I have been using Deadline Slug Bait. Very few plants are lost to slugs.

This is what a slug looks like after eating Deadline. The Blue pellet is Deadline.

Whitjr

Looking forward to seeing some of your plants.

I was out yesterday and found a four year old 3 prong were a slug had eaten through the stem and the top was laying on its side. I hate when that happens!!!

My two and three year olds are almost all up but not opened all the way. Seedlings are coming up well and four and five year olds are coming up slow in the cool wet weather were having.

Here's a couple pics of three yr olds beds. Their filling in nicely.

Great pics. How do you keep the weeds and other unwanted plants out of your ginseng beds?

I was wondering the same thing. My woods floor covering is very thick.
I figure I would hit mine with roundup about 4 weeks before planting.
You beds are looking great!!!

Latt, kollrayz

Most of my beds were chosen to plant, because they were close to perfect with the soil and very little weeds and other things growing under a canopy of mostly sugar maple. There is plenty of companion plants growing nearby and some growing in the beds.

But don't get me wrong. I do have few beds that do have weeds growing in them but not alot. I usually leave the weeds alone unless they start interfering with the seng plants. For those, I wait until all the seng plants are up, then I remove the weed root and all, if its not right next to a seng plant. And if it's next to a root, I clip the top of the weed to ground level then cover with leaves. That helps keep the weed from growing too much again. I do like to leave some companion plants within the beds.

I have read, that if you have an area that has alot of weeds, it is a sign of recieving too much sun light and you should choose another area to grow seng. But I also have seen other shade loving plants growing in abundance in areas that would otherwise be great for seng. Then again I have read in Person's book that some spray weed killers before their seng emerges in the spring like what koolrayz suggested. So I suppose if an ideal area had alot of weeds to begin with, it would probably be good to spray roundup the summer before you plant seeds.
