TOPIC: Cultivated Ginseng To Wild

Cultivated Ginseng To Wild 13 years 11 months ago #9527

I need an experts help on this question. Say you plant some ginseng and give it fertilizer... and then you transfer it to the wild. Would it slowy convert to wild ginseng? because it has been around 4-5 years since i planted my cultivated ginseng in the wild. so i need to know what this ginseng would be clasified as... wild/wild simulated/no pesticides grown/or would it still be considered just plain fertilized cultivated ginseng. thanks. -HugeSang

HugeSeng

How long did the roots grow as cultivated before transplanting them to the wild?

classicfur...

I am not fully sure but if i have to say... 4+ years. Most of them were 3 or 4 prongs before i moved them. Thanks for replying. -HugeSeng

Don't know for sure but I would think that with 4+ years in cultivated (and fertilized) soil, they would have been quite a ways in development when you moved them to wild/woods type soil.

I expect they already had that long straight main trunk root look to them when you transplanted.

If so - probably not a real good chance of them selling as wild or wild simulated when you do harvest.

Good Luck anyway !

PS - you could always harvest a few each year and mix em in with some wild and see if they can get a wild price that way.

Even by letting them grow on their own in the wild the compacted soil was loosened when you transplanted , thereby providing a more advantageous growing medium. Good for growth, bad for stress rings and wild prices.

Most likely the roots will be easy to identify as a cultivated transplant. In this situation the roots will generally develop what some refer to as \"flippy tails.\" This means that the appendages of the root, i.e. legs, arms, etc., will start to curl up, making the shape of a \"J\". That is also a tell tale sign for wild roots that have been transplanted back to a bed, as someone mentioned in the thread - when you transplant you are loosening up the soil and creating the potential for \"J\" roots. The effect would less drastic on a much younger and smaller root. Best of luck.

Tanner,
I bought 5 lbs of great seed from the Muskingum Soil and Water. I think I remember them referencing your name and I may have talked to you already. I would love to buy some more seed this coming fall. Please let me know if you think any will be available again.
Also I wold love to see the Ohio operation from where the seed came from if that is possible. I always like to see an active ginseng operation which can provide many good tips on growing ginseng.
Thanks,
Latt

Hey Latt,

We will have seed for sale again this year. Haven't talked to the supplier yet this year, but we have been selling for over 10 years now and supply hasn't been a problem yet. Feel free to contact me directly at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

I believe you are already on my list for notification when I have prices and availability.

I can inquire about seeing the operation in person and see how they feel. Can probably get some pics for sure. Talk soon.

Tanner,
Let him know I am willing to go blind folded for the last 5 miles of the trip as to not know the location of the ginseng patch. lol

Yup most likely the necks will be thick for the fertilized years, then revert back to the thin wild look.
An obvious fake for wild.
If you are lucky they may pass as TNHunter suggests.

Let us see them when you dig'em up.
