TOPIC: Fungicide & Insecticide as deer & Turkey deterent

Fungicide & Insecticide as deer & Turkey deterent 9 years 4 months ago #36178

I am so tired of loosing 3/4 of my seed crop to deer and turkey. I was spraying my maters and noticed how bad the spray smells and I got to thinking. Do you recon this stink would make the pests stay away from my sane? So I mixed up a batch and sprayed the heck outside edges of my seed beds. Being careful not to spray my sane.I have never sprayed it for fear of causing it to lose any (if any) immunity it may have to fungus.I do believe that it has some immunity, and I figure if it no longer needed it due to being sprayed it may lose it and not pass it on to its seed. Any way I'm giving this a try I will post back with results in a few weeks.

No! I have an apple orchard and have to spray throughout the summer. Immidan smells to high heaven and it does not stop deer from munching terminal ends. Wish I had better news for you.

Oh well I will give it a try this season .They are not any orchards or farms in my area that do a great deal of spraying. So maybe the deer will be weary of the smell. They should not be use to it.

I can scare the deer but not the turkeys...go to your local clip shop .get a trash bag of the human hair they cut off, scatter around you patch and the deer will go away...stupid turkeys will make a nest out of it...

Wow ,what a bummer. I could have filled a gallon bucket with green sane berries last week. Now I don't have enough to collect.I don't recommend the fungicide and insecticide ideal. It was like a little fawn and its mom and friends went sane berry hunting last night.Wiped out my best crop ever.I hope they can pass through their digestive system and still be able to sprout. They would have went back in the wild anyway.

Oh yeah I have tried the hair thing and the Irish Spring soap thing with no luck in the past.

 I've got a great story for ya. I have a commercial apple orchard and go to several talks, seminars and such every year. Last month I went to one where we went and toured some orchards w/ some specialists from some universities to give their expertise on pest management. At one point we got on the subject of deer deterrents and using soap. We got the laugh of the day when the guy that owned this orchard told us about some pinhead from the federal government said you could not legally use soap for this purpose at a commercial orchard as the soap is not labeled for this use! God's honest truth!

Your government at work! :S

......and BTW, the only thing that works 99% of the time is a good fence! Just make sure you shut the gates! I won't tell you how I know to do that!

In all honesty, all those things like hair and soap work for a bit, but the deer quickly get used to it.

Yeah A good fence would be a good I deal but my beds are so scattered I would have to fence out 8 acres,And still the turkeys and ground squirrels would take more than their share. I will get what I can and plant areas where I feel safe with. Thanks for the reply.
