One of the things that you mentioned was that you planted rootlets and that you spread or sprinkled bone meal on them.
If there is some way that you can cover these newly planted rootlets up to protect them, I would advise you to do that as quickly as possible. Possums, skunks , and raccoons can smell this and it is food to them. They will dig up your rootlets and eat them for sure. I have had this happen several times and some others on the board have as well. You're better off using granular fertilizer or liquid type to keep from having this problem if you want to add or amend your soil.
Yes, the fine root hairs will go down quickly if your soil is somewhat loose and fertile. I hope this helps some and good luck with your planting.
