TOPIC: Floating seeds

Floating seeds 10 years 5 months ago #28635

I ordered a pound of seeds from the first delivery this year from Wildgrown. When I float tested them, I had approx. 500 floating seeds. This was the day I recieved them. Understanding they are delicate, that seems like a high number to me. I still planted them and noted the issue in my journal. Any thoughts out there? Do you think they will grow?

Sometimes some seed suppliers do not ship seeds that have moist outer husk but the inner seed can still be fine. Soak them for 6 hours or more and I bet you most of those 500 seeds will sink. Yes, then plant them. The husk just needs a little moisture is all I am presuming.

I agree with Latt. Adding water is a prime way to introduce disease issues into your seed.

Thanks for the replies. That rebuilds my confidence. A lot of what I've read leans more towards the floating seeds not being viable.

Generally that is true. However, more and more growers/seed producers are stratifying seed above ground -and they do not add water. Therefore, the seed is incredibly dry compared to our expectations of traditional wisdom in the literature. On a seperate note, you will be hard pressed to find any grinning seed if it has been stratified above ground. However, this method produces consistently good results with low disease issues and high viability.

When they pull seed out of stratification which is stored above ground, they typically soak it over night before sirring it well and removing floaters.
