TOPIC: Roundup Application

Roundup Application 10 years 6 months ago #28226

I sprayed some roundup last fall on one of my spots after my plants layed down and again before they came up(now) on a less than ideal spot next to my house. In this location I had some good looking 2 year olds but I was sick of competing foliage. I could not find much info on people doing this and I am open to thoughts and ideas. I am nervous about my results and affects. I would think I would be more that ok because roundup is a contact herbicide and does not penetrate dirt/soil. Thoughts?

If there wasn't any Ginseng emerging at all you'll probably be ok. Glyphosate deactivates when in contact with the soil but there are some concerns with possible residue on leaf litter and an emerging plant rubbing against it as it pushes through. If im going to do it, I like for there to be a rain on the way in the next day or so but still have 4-6 hours of absorbing time in daylight hours before it starts. It's suppose to be rainfast in a couple hours but in cloudy, cool conditions I have seen it not take several times. If you have had a sufficient amount of time and since it's close to your house, stretch a hose out there and give the area a little shower if it put's you at ease. I know how it is, Im very O.C.D when it comes to this kind of thing.

Thanks hillhopper! Nothing is up yet and I don't think my plants in Northern Iowa will be up for a another week or so. Last year I emerged around may 14 and I think we are little behind this year.

I love the home security thing and being able to monitor my plants growth on a daily basis. That is where I get my passion

I have some home grown stuff, too, along with weeds! Because I am going as organic as possible, I just pull weeds manually on occasion. You should be fine with your Roundup treatments. Once it dries, there is no residue to affect sprouting plants.

Keep us posted on how the \"fight\" goes with the weeds in your ginseng patch!

Hillhopper already mentioned my main concern -that excessive residue remain on the mulch and comes into contact with the ginseng as they emerge. Other than that, I think youa re good.
