Latt,
When I worked up my bed for my seed producing plants...
I broke up a 8' x 14' area, probably 6-8\" deep and then raked the soil to the center from each side to form a 4 x 14 raised bed.
My soil was a bit low on calcium so I added some good stuff to it.
I brought in 30 gal (6 - 5 gal buckets) of rich rock chip filled soil from the best seng growing hollow that I know of and worked that into the bed.
I also layered on top of the bed strips of gypsum board which will break down over time releasing gypsum (calcium) into the soil.
I also added gypsum, bonemeal, and epson salt (Mg) to the bed.
Lastly I worked in 200 lbs of composted peat moss.
Each year (in Feb) I give it a good dose of gypsum.
5 of the roots in that bed I got from Billy... and yes the one with that tall flower spike is one of Billy's roots.
My local roots have rather short flower spikes - hardly ever rise above the leaves.
