TOPIC: Anxious ; To see my seed producing plants

Anxious ; To see my seed producing plants 10 years 8 months ago #27618

I transplanted some of my plants into 2 more seed producing beds in the fall. One 15 x 10 ft. The other pretty good size 40 ft x 30 ft. Probably a total of 500 plants.
Just hope they do well.
I think everyone should try to have their own seeds. They just seem to adapt better to your climate.

I feel ya, Rootman. I am really looking forward to seeing what comes up this year.

If we get the great emersion like we did last year, I will feel really great.

Can't wait to see mine up again too...

It's been a long winter and even though there are signs of spring (one of my plumb trees is just cracking open blooms now)... I have a feeling this spring we will have some late cold spells.

Here is a pic of my seed producing plants from last July.

Be sure and post some pics of your seed producers when they are up and looking good.

Nice looking seng plants TN, How many seeds did you get from them last fall?

Rootman, I agree seeds do better from local plants. Those 500 plants should make a nice pile of seeds:)

Lenno..

I did not keep count... but try to pick them soon after they turn red and that stretches out over several weeks since they ripen at different times.

I learned real quick in my first fall with this seed bed NOT to leave red berries on even for a few days or the critters will get em. I basically got wiped out that year with all of my berries eaten. Now I put rodent poison out starting when the first green berries are developing and that works nicely.

I have 42 roots in that bed, and last year 41 of them sent up tops.

I would say I averaged around 10-15 berries per plant... 800-1200 seeds.

I have to pick berries as they get ripe too, they sure disappear if I don't.

Yep fellas looks like a seed producing bed is the way to go.

TN is that one big flower/seed spike in the pic from the plant you got from Billy?

Amazing how tall it is.

Looks like you have done a great job with your seed bed. Transplanting big roots is not always effective. 41 out of 42 is awesome. Could you re-post your technique for your soil composition when preparing the seed bed soil.
It may be helpful for anyone that wants to do the same.

Rootman,
If I remember correctly you had planted many roots too in a prepared seed bed with amended soil I think. I think you had posted pics of the seed bed that was fenced in behind a shed or barn if I remember correctly. Any tips for soil composition in a seed bed.

Thanks Fellas,
Latt

Latt,

The seed bed you're referring to is attached to the garage with poultry wire top and bottom.

I worked it up with a tiller then added 40 lb. of gypsum. I raked up a truck load of poplar and maple leaves and tilled all that into the soil. I then raked up ten ridge rows with drainage pipe between each row. I planted my roots with the necks about 2 inches below the top of the ground. I also covered it with more leaves after planting.
The plants seem to be doing pretty good and at least the critters haven't got to them, YET!
