Actually, I have grown them in shade gardens and they do look great along with some other woodland botanicals. I had a picture (might still be on my site somewhere) of a big one I grew beside my porch when I lived in town. It was a fully western full sun exposure....shaded by cinnamon ferns.
You won't regret doing that. It will also make you a better sang hunter when you see the plants every day or so throughout the summer. You will start recognizing them by their shape and foliage more than the berries and stems.
I am also doing a bed of full blown cultivated starting this year. Going to see if I can get three prongs and full berries by the third year like the commercial guys do.
