TOPIC: Adelgids

Adelgids 11 years 4 months ago #23132

You guys have problems with adelgids? I've been looking over my new sprouts patch and it seems like a few of my plants have adelgid infestations.

Ittiz,

Have to admit I did not know what Adelgids were until I did a google search and checked them out.

A couple years ago in my seed bed I found a few of my plants (the flower spikes mostly) covered in this funky looking white stuff. I thought it was some kind of fungus or something at first but on closer inspection could see that is was some kind of small insect. They were sort of concentrated on just the flower spike and the flower spike stem.

I basically just wiped them off with my fingers a couple of times and that seemed to do it. They did not spread to other plants and did not seem to bother the ones they were on.

After reading on them more this morning I see they are a sap sucker, and make it hard on lots of trees (hemlocks, christmas tree pines, etc). No dout they could make it hard on your ginseng if they can destroy pine forrest.

They are a soft bodied little critter and you might try a ogranic solution that works great on most soft bodied pest.

Diatomaceous Earth

www.amazon.com/Grade-Diatomaceous-Earth-...s=Diatomaceous+Earth

I mostly use it on my tomatoes for Tomato Horn Worm and other catapillar type pest.

I read a few of the reviews on the product (link above) on amazon and looks like it works on Bed Bugs, Fleas, Lice, etc.

When soft bodied insects / catipillars come in contact with it, it basically cuts their body and they die from fluid loss.

It is harmless to humans.

Below a few details on the product..

Diatomaceous Earth is Mother Nature's product with no harm to the environment, pets or to people. Diatomaceous Earth is not an earth, it is the fossilized remains of microscopic shells created by one celled plants called DIATOMS. Diatomaceous Earth kills by physical action, not chemical, by puncturing the insects exoskeleton and absorbing its body fluids, thus posing no harm to warm-blooded life. Moreover, on any surface, these natural pesticide products have a remarkable repellency factor. As long as it is present, insects tend to stay away, making a serious infestation unlikely. Also, the more it is used, the more an environment is created that tends to make insects feel unwelcome.

I just read up on them too. I see they are closely related to aphids. We can have problems with them on newly formed shoots on apple trees but it really has to be a big infestation. If I only have some on less than 25% of new shoots, I don't worry about them.

Two natural predators are lacewings and lady bugs. I normally have a bunch of ladybugs around and they keep aphids in check.

You can buy lady bugs to put in orchards and vegetable farms, I bet that would help if you think you have a big problem with these critters on seng.

Is this the same bug that we used to call \"spitbug\"???

I had a small problem with these a few years ago in my garden, however the ladybugs I bought cleaned them out.

Nah spit bugs are something else. They usually have a spit like substance surrounding them. Adelgids have fluffy white stuff surrounding them. I hear they are killing hemlocks down south by the thousands.

I'll have to keep my eyes open for them. not too familiar with these.

Just went to look these up. I am seeing these on hemlocks near Boone, NC. They are there, however havn't seen a lot of them. Guess that is a good thing.

That bug has been around here for many years now, the best way I have come up with kill it is, vegetable oil a bit of liquid soap and a bit of iso alcohol and peroxide. 1% of the iso and 1% for the peroxide.
This bug seems to like the seed stem and will kill the seed production of the plant if not controlled.
This year along with this bug we are seeing gray leafhoppers on any soft plant tissue. If you hit some plants a white sworm of these critters fly around and back to the plant.
