TOPIC: Is this dampening off? Or somthing else

Is this dampening off? Or somthing else 11 years 6 months ago #22646

Most of my beds are looking good, but only had like a 2% emergance rate...I did a little poking around in that bed and found that many apparently promptly emerged and succumbed to some sort of disease...
1. Can u identify the illness
2. The roots look really strong will they come back next year?
3.should I spray some kind of fungicide early in the hopes that they will be healthier if the reemerge next year.
4. Any other reconmendations?

\"Dampening off\" is really a generic term that includes fusarium, pythium, verticullum wilt and many other diseases that harm seedlings when they're young. Honestly, from the foliage, it favors phytophthora but its kinda early in the year for that. The other bad news is that any that look like that are walking the green mile. I'm betting its fusarium. I would recommend a copper sulphate/lime spray and try to salvage what you can before it spreads. Iv honestly never seen that on ginseng seedlings before, tree seedlings yes but not ginseng. I'm guessing your planting area may be too wet.

Yea it was a flatter area, but the drainage seemed good...I wanna try and save what's left in that bed...can I get the fungicide you mentioned at Medards? Does it have a brand name? Should I spray my other beds too?

If that's running through your planting then I would spray it all. A feed store or garden center should have it for you to mix yourself, it won't come pre mixed. Be careful of straight copper sprays, some can really burn your foliage and ultimately kill your plants unless its neutralized with hydrated lime.

Sly,

I agree with Hillhopper on the copper sulphate. I've found out over the years any flat areas should be avoided, no matter how good they look.

Thanks for the info gentlemen...there is a bit of good news...the plant that keep find rotting is not my seedlings....I miss identified it because it had simalar seration on the leaves....I thought the \"missing leaf\" and thin stalk were due to the rotting prices...and it was growing right next to my healthy seng seedlings, rookie mistake...I'm sure if you guys saw it in person you would know right away it wasn't one on of my seedlings...I'm still going to spray all of my beds just to be safe....I'm posting some pics of the plant when it healthy Mabey someone knows what it is

It has four leaves in the one pick I pulled two of them off and it looks exactly like the pics I posted lasted night minus the disease and enough like seng to fool this rookie when it's rotting
