Whitjr,

In the pics, are those Pine needles scattered amongst the Oak leaves? If so, how close are the Pine trees to your' Ginseng beds? I know from experience and information from the Old Timers, that Ginseng planted near Pine trees does not fair very well, while Ginseng that is established before the Pine trees intrude into their' locale, usually acclimates to the Pine oils, sap and the acidity of the ground. If your' Ginseng in the pics is growing near Pines, then I hope that they can adjust to the environment that the Pines create!

Frank- I have tried to stay away from the pines when I planted. There are a few, and a couple of hemlocks as well. Mostly there are hardwoods. I guess I'd estimate that for every 20 hardwoods, there is a pine, so a 20:1 ratio.

In 2011 I found several nice seng plants growing in the edge of a pine thicket.

The area just east of where they were growign had been clear cut and planted in pines.

Some of these were growing right in that edge and had survived the clear cutting.

The pines were in the 15 year old range, and some of the roots I found were 35+.

They seemed to be doing fine. These were white pine.

There were older mature plants and smaller 3 prongs growing in the edge of the pines with pine needles all aroud them.

In this pic you can see a nice 4 proing and a double top 3 proing and some smaller plants too.

It was extremely dry that year and the plants were a little stressed out.

But her is another nice one I found growing in the pines.
