Yes whitjr, all I have left are dead stems. They do have growth buds so they should be back next year.

I can only imagine how I'd feel if my mountain patch was like yours. It's hard to be optimistic when things don't turn out well.

Last year, I had about 3% emergance from all the seed I planted. My optimism was flagging, and I had to recreate it every time I worked in the patch.

Hang in there...

whitjr, for me the worst part is I dont have any seeds to stratify so I will have to buy seed next fall.

Nice Whitjr!!
Noticed a little pine straw on the ground in the one pic. I have some ginseng growing under white pine here and there and it is doing really well.

Looking good Whit! About half of my 3 leafers are already down. The early drought we had put them down early, but in the last couple of weeks we've got quite a bit of rain, so I expect the rest of them to hold on for a while. I've been putting in lots of hours at work (72 last week),and haven't gotten out in a little while and probably wont get a chance to for at least another week.

Latt- about the pine straw. There are several pines spread out amongst the trees in there. I tried to not plant too close to them, however as it turns out, it's really not a big deal. This was contrary to what I'd read in my research, however that's fine.

I think once you get the soil right.. things go resaonably well if the weather and deer cooperate....

I'm going to hang my deer camera up therer this weekend, when I go back to get more work on mountain patch #2.

Agreed, Ginseng does fairly well under White Pine especially. I have grown some under thick needled blue spruce and Norway pines and the seed came up the first year but not the second. The big thick needled dense pines block a lot of the rain and light from hitting the ground and it is very dark and dry.

LHi guys, I unexpectedly got a chance to take a walk in the woods this morning. I found my first ripe berry of the year. it was hanice to plant a couple of seeds today. I only found the one red berry, and it really looks like they may be ripening over a long period of time this year as many of cherries are just now starting to fill out. also have seen where a few plants have abandoned berry production for the year. Anyways, here's a couple of pics from today
