TOPIC: weather conditions

weather conditions 12 years 5 months ago #17787

Boy!
We sure are getting the rain here this Spring. I noticed that several of you have said that it has been dry where you are , but this has continued to be the wettest Spring for me that I can remember while growing ginseng, It poured last night and again this morning, with more forecasted during the day.I hope this doesn't cause disease problems. I just got an application of Gypsum down and it is really getting washed in.

Hugh,

We got more rain here yesterday evening and last night and it is still cloudy and looks like it might rain more today.

When it rains now I always think if my garden and my ginseng growing... it is sort of a mixed blessing.

My garden and the ginseng both need rain, but in June last year we had lots of rain and I had quite a bit of seedlings with the yellow spot too.

I bet that will be happening agian this year. I have already seen some evidence of it on some wild seng in my area.

Would be nice to get just enough rain for the ginseng to thrive, but not enough to cause fungal disease issues.

Not sure if that is even possible.

Good Luck to All !

I have similar conditions here as well. got about and inch on tues/wed.s, and it's raining now again, and supposed to rain thru the day until tomorrow.

Like TNHunter said- garden is happy, worrisome to the 'sang.

Ain't it grand being a farmer?

After getting nearly 3 inches Tuesday morning, I received another inch last night/this morning. Not worried about diseases, just yet, as it had been actually pretty dry prior to these events. Will be interesting to see how things play out the next several weeks...

We got a good downpour the other night...and its been raining now since last night. So, my worries about an early drought are now officially over! :)

All that rain missed me by only a couple miles. The ground in the woods is still holding good moisture though...no worries for now.

The rain has been about right here in southeastern Ky. We had a cool 46 degrees yesterday morning. Had to go back inside and get me a long sleeve shirt. Turned out to be a beautiful day, around 70.

Well.
It just came another shower a few minutes ago here in East Tn. I told my wife that we really did not need any more for about two weeks. There is more on the way.

On another note. I had just had a soil test done on the woodlots that I have at my house and yesterday we drove to our patches in the mountains. I thought enough time had passed to see just how well each spot is growing sang in the wild. I have mentioned before that one of the sights is the strongest soil that I've known about since my chldhood days. It really was obvious to the natural eye just how different the size of the plants were in this special spot as compared to all the others. The seedlings appeared to be twice as high and the plants were almost twice as big as the other plants that I have. I'm going to do some soil tests on these sites and see just what this special site contains that makes such a difference. That may give us first hand knowledge of what we need to shoot for when adjusting the soil on a site that we are about to plant ginseng on.

That strong area you posted about. I'd be real curious about it's report. Can you post results perhaps? At least the five major things....

Whitjr,
I'm like you. I think it will be real interesting to see just what a certain type of soil contains that causes ginseng to perform at it's best level. There seems to be several pockets of it in the mountains through Tennessee and we have found some more places to plant. I'll be looking at those Calcium, Phosphorus, and Potassium levels. It sure grows companion plants well. Black Cohosh is blooming now and it is head high. I'll get a sample and have it tested as soon as I'm in the area again. We'll all get to compare notes as to how each one's soil tested.
