TOPIC: Surprise in the wild sim patch

Surprise in the wild sim patch 12 years 5 months ago #17695

I finally got to get out there and check on some of my stuff. I have been very dishearted because of some of the much needed shade trees that the timber folks took. (Same as they always seem to take a nice tree or two off your neighbor's place and just send him a check) The place is all grown up terribly. But, when I got to poking round in there, the ginseng was doing just fine underneath all that mess some three years later. I found most of them were nice size three prongs and then there were all kinds of fours! This is the best picture I took of a bunch of fours together.

As long as that spot isn't too open, looks like a good growing spot!

PS - just looking at that poison ivy that is also growing, I'll probably break out with it itch'n in a few hours!

BCastle,
That is some nice looking Wild Simulated. They look to be between 8 to 12 years old if I had to guess. So you have been at this for awhile. I still can't figure out how some say a root buyer can distinguish between Wild Simulated verses Wild roots when they grow in the same woods under the same condition. Those look like wild plants to me and I have found them in the wild bunched together many times just like in your pic.
Thanks for the pic.

kchacha,
No poison ivy there. Those are berry canes...and lots of them in there these days. I have grown ginseng by my porch on a western exposure with only ferns as their shade. In this spot, (also a western slope) I was concerned about airflow when all the weeds got thick like they did.

Latt,

Thanks for the kind words. Now you understand why I was so surprised to find them there. They are in their seventh year at the most. I seeded again after two years, and if this spot opens up some, I\"ll seed it again.

Here is a picture of the site before I prepared -trimmed for airflow etc. And another after I seeded seven years ago. Then, the third is how it looked the summer after they timbered three years ago. The final one is how it looked yesterday.

I agree with you Latt, in that I can't figure out the difference in wild simulated and wild. I get some folks who bring me ginseng they have grown and its boney and grey...really nasty stuff and it is typical of someone who admits their ginseng is 'woodsgrown'. But, my woodsgrown (as opposed to wild sim) is nothing likt that. In fact, I'll dare anyone to tell the difference in my woodsgrown and wild sim or truly wild ginseng after about three years.

Hello fellas. I havent been on and posted in awhile so I thought I would share a few pics tonight.
I checked on my plants this weekend and did a little spraying also. I was happily surprised to see how vigorous my plantings were doing. Apparently these two year olds are accomadated well in their home. I wasnt expecting to have seed from the 2010 planting yet but Ill take what I can get.

Hill,
If all those plants are two year olds your going to have to tell us how you prepared those beds. They are exceptional! Hats off to you my friend. That is some strong soil and some excellent planning.
