TOPIC: Last Pass through the newly planted beds

Last Pass through the newly planted beds 12 years 6 months ago #17537

Evening guys,
My wife and I made our last pass through the plantings that I made last year to see if any late germination had taken place. We also wanted to see how perspective new spots looked after getting into early summer growth. There were more seedlings that had come up and we photographed a few to show you the differences in early plantings where the seed had not yet been refrigerated and how it looks later. The difference is stark in contrast. The first picture that I took was when I first began planting and the waist pack tilted over and spilled a pretty good bunch of seeds. It looks like every one of them came up.

I'll give this another try.
Hugh

Hugh - From reading your posts and looking at your pics and watching your videos it seems that you and I have taken very similar approaches to planting and trying to grow ginseng. From my own experience and talkin to others as well as reading several of the posts on this site, I am definately leaning toward the belief that refridgerating seed is causing delayed emergence. The plants you have shown in your pics do look very good. I have a couple of areas that look like your first pic on your site where I had spilled some seed. I'll probably wait till the fall of 2013 and transplant most of what is left then to spread them out some. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors, but from my viewpoint it seems like you have some of the most important details figured out.

I was thinking the same thing 5prong, regarding refridgeration.

Beautiful woods you got there Hugh! How heavy did you seed those areas in the vidios?

Guys, Thanks for taking a look and for your comments.

Maya,I planted the rows in a \"Modified Hankins method\" in all of the mountain locations. I basically took a long handle spade and raked a small trench a couple of inches below the soil level and then sprinkled the seed about 4 inches apart. This never turns out to be exact and some are closer than that and some are farther apart than 4 inches. The rows that I planted in my woodlots at the house are 200 ft long ,but the rows in the mountains may be 6 feet, some 12 feet and some 20feet. I did not want them as thick in the mountains so as to not have disease problems. I'll have to dig some of the real thick spots and spread them out to give better air flow.
I think we are coming to a concensus that placing seeds in a refrigerator that is pretty cold may be giving us delayed dormancy problems. I think we'll get a definite answer to this next Spring when we see new three leafers coming up with 5 leafers even though we did not plant.Let's stay on top of this until next Spring.

HUgh- I forgot about the nice website you have. I gotta try that some day, however I don't think I can cram anything more in now. Spending a lot of time on my day gig, and what I'm thinking of as my part-time gig...

Anyway, nice looking plants there. Hope that your growing has every success.
