TOPIC: Weeds

Weeds 12 years 6 months ago #17436

Hi Guys, Its great to be back in the woods again! Last year Five Pronger Helped me find a small patch on my property(Thanks 5 Pronger) to which I started planting seeds at this location. I just went up there to check things out and low and behold I was able to spot seng growing all over that hill! now the

plants are spread out and they are not the seeds I planted the biggest ones are only 3 prongs and mostly all two's My question is... Around a few of these plants I noticed there is a vine looking type grass I think maybe its called itch weed and there is like a few other types of things growing right against the seng. To me being a gardner I feel the weeds will suck the moister from the ground starving the seng. So Is it ok to pull the weeds close to each plant or do I leave them alone? I have some pics Im trying to post on here but I am having a hard time downsizing the pics to fit on here.

cpdunit1,

I think Seng does well in competition with most other wild woods plants.

No doubt there are exceptions to that, very invasive types. I have seen some poison ivy patches so thick that it would be very difficult for seng to grow in it, perhaps impossible.

I found a small patch of seng a few years ago growing in a very thick place, some poison ivy and other stuff was really crowding it. I cut the poison ivy and other stuff back and the seng is doing fine now. But not real sure how much that helped it out, because it was growing there anyway.

It looks better to me for sure (especially getting that poision ivy out of the way). I hate that stuff.

If you have the time, and are willing, I am sure it will be OK for you to eliminate the competition around your seng, especially in areas where it appears to be really competing with the seng as long as you do it in a way that will not harm the seng. Pull up vines and other plants roots and all. Just try not to disturb the seng plants or roots.

If it is only a small amount, I would not worry about it too much.

Nice little 3 prong in your picture. It was probably a 2 prong last year, and most of the plants I find like that around here are in the 4-5 year old range. It grows kind of slow here on my place (the wild stuff).

In the case of that one in the pic - I don't see any reason to clean up around it, nothing crowding it.

Good Luck !

If I'm thinking of the right thing, it will die off in a few weeks/month or so. It sort of covers the ground in the spring and looks all lacy and carpet like. I think in the spring, every plant that helps suck up the excess moisture is helping me.

I wouldn't sweat it. If you can, snap us a picture.

Hey thanks guys. I talked to 5pronger today and he advised me the same thing. The more I think about it I wouldnt want a bunch of bald spots around the plants as this might make it easier for poachers to spot!. As for the pics I took about 50 of them of diferrent seng plants. Afterwards I felt a little silly as each plant looks the same in the pictures.I was just tickled turdless to be able to spot them and find to me what I call a bunch of plants! this being my first spring that I was able to properly Identify them. Last fall 5 pronger took the time to go out and show me my first plants after 5 years of searching for them lol. fyi today I found 3 fresh blonde morels. I found a bunch about 3 or 4 weeks ago but I kinda suspected they werent done popn up. Headen out in the morning to scout for more. by the way after planting my seeds last fall I am seeing a nice success rate of seedlings. my new motto is \"Observe It, Don't Disturbe It\"! Have fun guys ttyl
