One more thing to mention.

Last Fall Billy sent me a nice root from a 5 prong and I planted it in a real nice spot.

I checked that spot this morning and there is no top up from that root yet.

I did find a decent 3 prong up just around the hill a bit, but nothing showing up from that 5 prong yet.

I will check back on that root in a week or two. Hope it comes up a 5 prong again this year.

Great pics TN! Thanks for sharing them. I don't have any seng plants up yet and probably won't for a week or two. We had a nice warm spell a couple of weeks ago, but for the past week it has been struggling to get out of the 50's with lows in the mid to upper 30's and the forcast for the next week is for more of the same. I haven't even found the first morel mushroom yet. I don't usually find morel's until about mid April and ginseng usually sprouts toward the end of the month or the first part of May. This year a lot of the plant life is well ahead of schedule, but unless we get some warmer temps the morels and ginseng may show up right on its normal timeline.
I spent a good bit of time planting seng last fall and am really chomping at the bit to see the results of those efforts.

Those were some really nice looking 2 year old plants. I know that a lot wild plants in my area show up as 5-leaf one prongs their second year. I'm sure you probably had some like this as well, but it looks like the addition of gypsum to your wild simulated plantings is definately helping.

5prong...

You are correct in that I did see several one prong 5 leafers in my 2 year old stuff, but the large majority were 2 prongs.

Some had 2 prongs with 3 leaves on both prongs, others had 3 on one and 5 on the other, and some had 5 on both sides.

I would say that 80% or more of my 2 year olds (of what is up now) were 2 prongs.

I do expect the gypsum has helped. I put it down when I planted, and again this spring (back in mid Feb).

I plan to put it down only once a year in Feb, instead of in the fall and spring like Scott suggest in his book.

As long as they continue to make progress like this, only once a year should be fine.
