Thats right BCastle as long as the root sprouts a bud for next year is all you need to be concerned with in a wild simulated planting.
Some roots just make the one inch mark, but if your roots grow to fast you will loose the wild look so watch the fertilizer.

I never fertilize ginseng. However, I'm thinking to experiment with it on goldenseal and cohash.
