TOPIC: Root Size after One Season

Root Size after One Season 13 years 1 month ago #14544

I read a post on here awhile back, stating that roots after one year of growth should be atleast 2\" long in order to be strong enough to survive into the next season.

So I dug up five random first year seedlings to see how they measure up.

If you count the fine hair root, they measured between 2\" to 3 3/4\" long. The shortest one was kind of short and fat. But They all had nice growth buds for next year and they seemed healthy.

From past experience, I have found that if they make it through the first season, they will emerge the next spring. Usually, if they die off, it's during the growing season, be it the first or second. After the second year, very few die off.

Overall they looked pretty good!

I don't know. I\"ve always thought that as long as the seedlings make it until the middle of July or so, they are usually going to be back the next spring. I know some wild sim and woodsgrown stuff look more like match sticks after the first year and will be hard pressed to make two inches in length.

Interesting observation.

That's a nice seedling. Looks to be 4\" or more. Good lookin soil in the back ground. Were you diggin up seedlings to transplant?

Thanks,

classicfur,
The soil there was super fertile and loose. I had dug a couple to investigate the growth for the year since these had went down by the first of August. They aren't all that size, that was just the most optimal spot of last year's planting.

The couple I dug in august looked similar to yours, Classicfur. Nice looking plants you have there!

Thats right BCastle as long as the root sprouts a bud for next year is all you need to be concerned with in a wild simulated planting.
Some roots just make the one inch mark, but if your roots grow to fast you will loose the wild look so watch the fertilizer.
