TOPIC: Looking for seed

Looking for seed 13 years 1 month ago #14494

Well first off Id like to say I love this site and all the information. Long time browser of the forums and never registered until now.

I usually buy seed for &70 a pound to plant. Well this year Ive gotten behind in everything and all I see is Sold out place and a pound of ginseng seed going for $100+. Wow has prices gone up. Anyone know where I could buy some seed still for around %70 a pound.

Thanks, Clay

Clay,

I just bought some seed yesterday from Hardwood Ginseng.

hardwoodginseng.com

I was in a real bind for seed, and the seller (Mike) was beyond helpful in all ways. Also, I have seen accurate and reliable reporting (with pics) on this forum as to the quality of Mike's seed.

Mike's price includes free shipping, and if you use PayPal, it is really easy with online ordering.

The price is going to be beyond your target price, but it is my contention that (given proper site and planting methods) you will benefit in the long run with a high germination rate.

I don't know of anyone selling @ $70/lb. but I would consider it risky at best to buy and put in the time/labor of planting at that price.

Just my opinion.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

Bill

Hey, Thanks for the info. I found some on Ebay for $90/lb and got them. I was surprised to see that they came from an in state seller. There looks to be many 'grinning' seeds. Is that a good sign that I got decent seeds?

Thanks

Doesn't sound like a covert advertisement to me.

Clay,

Seeds split and grinning is a good sign that (at least those that are split and grinning) have had proper embryo development.

However - last year I bought a pound of seed from a well known and trusted seed supplier and when it arrived, some were split and grinning, and some even had 1/4\" tails. I assumed it was all good seed.

Planted it just like I did all of my other (very successful plantings) but less than 1% actually germinated in the spring.

At that time I was not wise to splitting the seeds open and checking for proper embryo development.

What you should do it pick out a few that are cracked/smiling and split them open and check the embryo.

But be sure you pick out several that are not cracked/smiling (still sealed up tight) and check them too. I would check about twice as many that are not cracked yet and make sure they show proper embryo development.

If the seed has been properly stratified, the embryo will be in the 2-3 mm size range. Some may be a bit larger some a bit smaller, but most should be in the 2-3 mm size range before you accept the batch as good.

Below is a link that shows some good details on the subject:

Good Luck !
