TOPIC: This weather!!!

This weather!!! 13 years 2 months ago #12445

In the middle part of the week I looked for seng until lunch time and the temperature got on up to 97 degrees in the afternoon. I have been working on new beds and doing a lot of planting \"Hankins Style\". Thursday and Friday were both 98 degrees. The ground is so dry that I have been wetting it before I dig so that I can walk over the rows and mash the dirt down enough to get some contact with the seeds. I then have been watering the rows again, hoping that it will settle some more and make good contact with the seeds so they don't dry out. This afternoon the temperature got up to 102 degrees while I was working and then it came a thunderstorm. I hope the ground is in better shape by Monday. Good luck to all of you with this \"extreme weather.\"

I wish you the best as well Hugh. You may want to consider planting in October. If the planted seeds dry out you might lose them all. I know our soil is dry 4 inches deep and it is even worse in the southern states. With no berry to protect the stratified seed they might just dry up as it is so hot and dry.

Hugh Hartsell

I agree with Latt 100%.

Best time to plant seeds is Oct. I try to plant my seeds starting the first week of Oct.

I usually wait for a good rain, then plant my seeds right after the rain. In Maine it usually rains atleast once a week.

I think planting in dry soil is too risky.

Try watering the soil the best you can on the seeds you have already planted. And make sure you cover with a good layer of mulch.

Good Luck!

Well,
I just looked at the local weather map and this is what we have to deal with on Monday and Tuesday. www.weather.com/weather/alerts/localaler...ce=KMRX&etn=0002 . Hopefully this will get the ground back in shape and I'm looking forward to seeing some cooler weather. I guess that whatever plants that I find from this point on will just be used to transpant and since I have a lot of seed I'm going to try to replant lots of areas that I go into on fishing trips. The wild sang growing areas need a lot of help here in East Tennessee.

The weather has been brutal in your state!

I understand that ['sang seeds can be planted most any time that the ground isn't frozen.... just do it right when you do it. I'd have to agree with Latt and Classicfur and plant them when either the weather breaks, or sometime when it isn't so dry.

Good luck, there!
