TOPIC: Treating seed and Mildew

I just found out that the seed I ordered is not treated.What is best?


I made 2 raised beds.One of the beds I mixed in hardwood chips to add bulk to the soil.The chips now have an White Mildew on them.What can I use to treat this?This is going to be a seed bed....

You might consider trying ACTINOVATE.

It is a organic fungicide that you can get from Johnnyseeds.com

On the pack description it says - Effective agains: brown patch, dollar spot, powdery mildew, grey mold, root rot, damping off, crown rot and more...

I read thru more detailed doc on it and it also says it is effective agains Alternia Blight (the biggie for Ginseng).

It is OMRI and WSDA listed.

I've ordered some \"actinovate\". From what I've read,it should be some good stuff.
I'd read a couple of years ago about it but it had not been released at that time for market.

I think I'm going to have to order some also.That 10% soak with bleech I have a few questions....

1-how bad does it effect geremation? 2- after soak do you rinse them again in clean water.3- how long of soak.

I've never had any trouble with germination. I soak them for 10 minutes. Then I rinse thoroughly a couple of times. I use a seive or screen to drain them in. If you do it in the sink take care not to let some go down the drain.
But to be honest, if the actinovate works the way it says it will I'll probably use it from now on because of the microbes working on any fungi that might show up later.

I agree with rootman there on the 10% bleach soak for 10 minutes.

In Scotts book he recommends that several times in different places and he says 10% for 10-12 minutes (page 148).

Last year when I got my first batch of seeds in, several were cracked (smiling) and I treated them like that.

Some here questined treating them when several were cracked/smiling and it made me wonder if that was Ok.

After that I started using a lower % of bleach (around 3-5%).

This spring those seeds that I treated with 10% for 10 minutes - they had as good (if not better) germination than any I planted.

So even if the seeds you get are well into the embryo development stage (starting to crack and smile and even show tails) I know now that that 10% solution for 10 minutes does not hurt them. They will sprout fine and the stronger treatment I expect has a better chance of getting rid of disease issues.

I would like to find a seed treatment that would stay with the seed until spring and help aid in germanation.The Actinovate looks like it just might be that product.My problem is if I get a low % that comes up I really don't know if it will be the seed or me..Being my first year my planting seed is very limited.Live and learn....

With the bleech solution, is this regular bleech or clorox bleech?

If you mean concentrated when you say Clorox then you would want to use regular strength.

On the Clorox I used regular (unscented).

I mention the unscented because when I went to treat mine last year I knew my wife had some but when I got it out it was scented.

You know how ladies are - got to use that scented smelly stuff

I was not sure if that would be OK or not, so to be safe I made a trip to wal-mart and got me a galon of regular unscented.
