TOPIC: How do you gauge % of shade?

How do you gauge % of shade? 13 years 3 months ago #11519

When I read about our favorite crop, there's discussion about 75% shade in the Persons book.

How do you gauge the accurite % of shade in your woods? I've been using models I've developed ofer many years of woods-craft, as well as judging from photos [in various 'sang growers sources].

What i do is i go to my site around 2 or 3 o' clock in the day when the sun is at its hottest and see where and how much sun is hitting to determine whether or not i need more shade or sun. But i usually just remove all the lower canopy and the bigger trees provide enough.

If it is not getting any sun and the plants are small then i consider on removing one of the bigger trees.

But honestly whit i don't know how they determine that unless you just do as i do and just look at how much sun is hitting the ground at around that time.

I hope i have helped you some, and good luck with your plantings.

I think I do pretty good at this, just looking to see what folks are using as their \"unit of measure\"

I just guess at it based on what I have experienced in the woods. I think we all can gauge fairly well on shade. I am sure we could use a shade meter used for determining how much shade there is but I think I will stick with experience.
