TOPIC: planting less seed and covering more ground

planting less seed and covering more ground 13 years 3 months ago #11219

If you want wild simulated seng, take a good strong 3 prong rake that makes it easy getting around vines and saplings. Scratch out 16 inch spots a step apart in a row as far as you desire then step down and repeat, only stagger it checkerboard style. I sow about 10 to 12 seed per hill. This method you cover a lot of ground with less seed and you have a lot of leaf litter to cover with. This also allows room later for seeds to be planted from the parent plants.

Have you been using this method for very long?

I've been doing this method for 5 years, What I like about this method it is harder for disease to spread and it is truly wild simulated, no sprays or fertilize. It seems that all the surrounding vegetation also wicks away the moisture in wet seasons and keeps it from root rot. I've been planting stratified seed for 15 years and believe me I've had all the problems.

Whitjr,
I've probably got 10 acres planted. Some of it spotty and some growing pretty well. It will sure try your patience, and then there is disease.varmits and two legged varmits but it's an experience that I wouldn't trade. To get fairly descent roots require about 10 to 12 years wild simulated style. My advice is treat your seeds for disease and space them well or they will surely die even after a few years of growth during a wet season. I'm just now starting to turn a profit so it is a slow process. Rootman

Frank.
I just use the 10% clorox bleach and water method, soaking for 10 minutes and rinse well.
I'm by no means a professional at growing seng, but trial and error was my teacher. long before information was available. I dug seng when I was a boy and sold it for $20 a lb.
