TOPIC: Inspected my patches today

Re:Inspected my patches today 13 years 4 months ago #10832

You can see form the date/time stamps on the photos that these raiders are going to and from the rootlets -not only at the times you'd think, however late at night and mid-day as well. Of the over 100 photos taken, I've seen many different deer, including a doe w/ fawn. She was teaching the fawn early where the gensing was!

Amazing that those deer came back so many times, it would seem that they would have made quick work of 300 plants,I wonder if they are coming back for something in the soil as well? did you add anything to the soil when you initally planted those rootlets? maybe there is some trace mineral there in the soil from something and the neighboring ginseng plants are just a bonus. It is just strange that they keep coming and sniffing around the same spot.

Hmm they could be after the gypsum.Bucks need calcium for antler growth.

Well.. very few bucks in the photos. Mostly does. There were two deer \"super-trails\" thru the thick rododendron that I removed, and rather imagine that since the rest of the woods is so thick, we are going to see the deer use the newly opened area for traveling.

I've got to distrupt this if I intend to have success...

Yeap definately.the only thing I can think of to discourage them may be an electric fence.either a Battery powered one or solar one if you have a sunny spot to charge it in.Place the wire up around 4 ft and put squares of Aluminum foil on it ever so often. On the Squares of Aluminum foil smear Peanut butter and plug it up.I'm sure the Doe also have to have so much Calcium too.the Bones in deer are Super Hard and I'm sure they have to Scrounge around where they can to find Calcium to maintain bone structure.

My seed bed plants where eaten by deer as well. They were all wild transplants of very nice root character and size. Had them caged off and were looking good all season. Went out to check on seed development and there was nothing left except rows of stems. There was tons of vegetation all around these plants, nothing browsed but the sang. The deer in our area have really developed a specialized taste for the plant. Maybe I will get some of my ginsinocides back when I eat the deer this fall! Whish I had a picture of all those stems to show, it was a sight.

No soil amendments or minerals added to my beds. The deer just come for the 'sang.

Just after I got my seed producing bed made and a few roots in it last fall - the next time I checked on it there were both deer and turkey tracks on it.

I put up a 36\" chicken wire fence around it and have not had any problems (so far) this year.

You guys are spooking me though - big time.

I bought another 36\" tall roll of wire but have not added it on top yet. That would take it on up to 6' total.

I would sure hate to go out there some day and all my tops and berry pods be gone with nothing but stems left. Yikes !

Good Luck to you guys in combating this situation.

I also noticed this in my bed. I had quite a few three prongs missing their tops but beside them were some four prongs that hadn't been touched. I couldnt tell if it was deer or some other pest. It hurts your feelings to see these berry pods getting full and the next week they are gone.
Im also getting fed up with these dang voles. Everytime i check my plantings i see a few plant tops pulled flat against the ground. I am seriously considering starting a kitty cat farm on these hill sides.
