Billy,
I have a bunch of land (200 acres) that has good stands of wild seng on it - just about every hollow does. It is about 15 miles from my home tract of land though (30 acres).
I hunted it year before last, and will hunt it again this year.
I was out there shrooming this spring and went up a little hollow I had not been up in a while and found 30+ decent 3 prongs while looking for shrooms.
Wish I had had as good of luck looking for that illusive morel.
Anyway - in a few years I will be moving my planting out there and at that point I will get to do like you are doing. Just put the seed in the ground and let it grow.
Right now while I am learning and experimenting some, getting this all figured out, I wanted to plant my place at home here. I can just walk out my door and be in my seng woods in no time at all.
My home place here has seng on it, but not near as stout and reproducing like my other large tract of land. I knew it was not quite right by just looking at the seng I find here, and a soil test proved that. My PH is good 5.4-5.7, but my calcium is on the low side 1450.
So here I will have to add some gypsum to get good results.
Out there on the big tract, I am not even going to soil test, no need to cause I will just plant it where I find good seng growing and trust it to do similar.
I look forward to that planting, even though I will have to drive out there and back, it will sure be nice not to have to tote the gypsum around to make it better.
