Check out the flower spike on the largest root/top that I got from Billy.

Looks to be 8-9\" long now and still growing :-)

Here is the spike on one of the other ones I got from Billy.

Nice !

Looks like I might get 40-50 berries off of each of those plants. 80-100 seeds.

That would be nice.

Here is one of my local seng root tops - a big stout 3 prong - tallest plant in the bed this year.

Much shorter berry stem, and not nearly as advanced.

Not sure how much cross pollination I will actually get since Billy's roots/tops seem to be much more advanced in flowering than my local root/tops are.

Couple years ago I transplanted 10 - 2 prong roots to a spot that is just up the hill from my seed producing bed.

Last year some of them were little 3 prongs and this one was the best of the bunch.

These next two pictures were taken last year in June and September.

Now here is that same little 3 prong - what it looks like this year.

It's about 2\" taller and quite a bit stouter this year.

I put a little gypsum around it last summer and more this winter.

Looks like it's fairly happy growing there just off my back yard.

Have a Great Weekend all !

TN,
Great pics!
That berry stem from Billy's plant sure is amazing. Mountain seng sure has its own characteristics. It will be interesting so see how your seeds do in the years to follow once they grow. All that cross pollination should produce some amazing plants eventually.

What damadged the leaves in the first pic's? I noticed the same damage on some of the plants that came up from my roots

koolrayz,

Not sure what caused the leaves on some of the tops from Billy's roots to be somewhat deformed this year.

I am hoping it is just temporary and will correct next year.

My guess would be mostly transplant shock and that he had to dig them, then plant them in some dirt at his house temporarily (until he got all 5 roots I asked for) then dig them upagain and ship them to me.

I planted 44 roots in that bed 39 were roots from my county, but from several different locations that were several miles apart, then 5 roots that Billy got for me from East Ky Mountains.

I think 4 of 5 of the roots I got from Billy the leaves are a bit deformed, but the tops from my local seng roots look normal. On my local seng roots I planted them the same day I harvested them so that probably made a difference.

Out of those 44 roots 42 of them sent up tops this year, 2 did not, but I hope they all will next year.
