I've had some plants produce 3 leaflets after 5-6 years. Is this older seed germinating or stunted plants? Is this a sign they are having trouble producing what i call the second stage of growth which is the 5 leaf branchs?
thanks!

Jason,
There could be a lot of circumstances at play that will limit or hinder plant progression. It could be the soil as in just not enough of the right minerals, the canopy cover as in too much shade, other plant life competing for needed minerals. It could be the location in the forest just isn't ideal for one or more of many reasons. Also keep in mind that the particular ginseng you are talking about maybe didn't read the manual to follow the exact order of things. I have two prongs on some seed that I planted two years ago and some are still coming up like they are new sprouts with one stem and three leaflets. Most of what I am seeing with two prongs are one prong with five (sometimes four) section leaf and the other \"prong with only three. I have some second year seed with one prong and four leaflets. This stuff is kind of like the way China runs it's own business, it will play by the rules but bend them in any way it can to gain the edge. lol If you have what you think is a better location, you could move the plants this fall. I hope this helps.
