I will be ginseng hunting this year for the first time in about 8 years. I have been getting excited about sept. 1 coming up but today my fiance said she talked to a guy who had said last year he was fined for collecting more than 1 pound of ginseng in North carolina. He said it was a new law .out...Is this true or was he just fined for collecting on national forest without proper permits? Does anyone know the current laws or even a website I could view them for myself. I plan on collecting ginseng on both national forest (with a permit) and private lands.
Well I went to the Nantahala national district office and the rumor about digging over a pound and getting fined is partially true. You can only get up to a 3lb wet permit to dig in the national forests. I personally purchased a 1lb permit and am hoping to not have any more than that on me at any given time. Your friend most likely purchased the 1lb permit and was caught with more than his remaining limit on him hence the citation
