Hey guys, when I got off work today I thought I would go check one of my close patches to see how it was doing. I hadn't been to it in a month.
All in all it looked healthy but the deer have been browsing some of my tops off! I can see right now I'm gonna have to hunt the deer around there a little harder this fall. Lol
Thanks Latt. Yeah I think if the deer are just browsing along and Seng is there then they browse the tops. I really don't think they seek out seng tops per say.
Thanks Hobler. Now that I'm back to fooling with ginseng, I'd like to keep tabs on it about every month or so. Like I said in another post, I planted these seeds back in the late 90s. There was no Seng here in this spot but it looked great.
I was shocked to see how well it has done 20 years later. I'm addicted as much now as ever. Lol
I also know places that get hit hard by deer. This can be a difficult problem. I may have some advice.
Look for places that have steep cliffs or that resemble box canyons. Deer have racial memories of mountain lions that cause them to avoid these areas. You may be able to manage ginseng in places like this without having to worry about deer.
