So I was doing a little hike up in the hills of Southwest VA where I spent this past weekend. This area was public land in the middle of nowhere near a neighborhood. Anyway, I was climbing the switchbacks when I saw a guy up ahead wearing a one-strap backpack with his little dog. I pass him going a different way, but I end up turning around to higher up the hill and pass him again. This time he was bent over sifting through these leaves right off the trail. It looked like he was either retrieving or planting a root by the way his hands looked, but I couldn't tell. What do you think he was doing? I'm just curious. Would it make sense for someone to be planting their old, small, roots this time of year?
