Has anyone noticed yet that the cost of commercial green seed has gone through the roof. The cost is now more than I sell ( sold ) my stratified wild simulated seed for.

My cost this year is nearly three times what I normally pay.

How much of the costs/increase is true? Many times people will adjust their asking prices 'cause they think that the market will bear it, not nec due to actual reality.

the gun industry comes to mind. As an example of market pricing going stupit-wild!!!!!

I buy directly from a trusted grower who provides some of the best seed I've tried on a consistent basis. On their end, seed is a market commodity and the price is subject to change every year. In fact, it went up since I started taking orders this year. On my end, I could not pass on the entire increase and remain reasonable or competitive. I'm taking it on the chin this year in the seed sales.

I was hoping to have 1/2 lb. of seed of my own this year but it's not going to happen.

We've just had to much rain and the seeds turned faulty. I'll still end up with about 2000 seeds, maybe. A lot of my plant tops water wilted and drooped over but the roots are still good and putting forth good buds for next year.

How's everyone else's seed crop doing?

Hello Rootman,
I'll have to say that I am disappointed with the seed production this year. The heavy , continuous rains here kept the flowers from pollinating and I probably did not get as much as 5% successful budset. I did get better set on my later blooming plants from Kentucky and Wild Tennessee Ginseng. Last year I planted all my seeds straight into the ground and this year I have been saving what few I'm getting to stratify. After 6 straight years of drought here, it's hard to imagine that there would be so much rain that it would cause this problem.
I do believe that all the extra water will cause some nice 3 prongs and 4 prongs next year.
Good luck to you this Fall.

Rootman, we have had a lot of rain too. Ended up with a lot of blight but still have many beds doing good. I have already stratified 3 pounds but not sure how many more I will get.

Brad, do you buy your seed green and stratify it yourself?

Here in NY its great.just the right amount of rain in the spring and just enough in the summer to keep them happy. I dont have much fore seed plants but plan on doin alot of transplant to increase seed production.but the wild plants r bursting with full berry pods heck even little 2 prongs have a couple seeds.I bet Ive seen 1800 plants thats babies n all the most ive seen in yrs n thats in 7 scouts.this is NY yr of the shang:laugh:

I myself had a little blight that tried to sneek in before the plants hardened off but after that everything went well. Seed production wasn't what I had hoped. I managed to pick several quarts but had hoped for alot more, I think rain hurt the seed set as well. Roots are growing extremely well I think. I've just came in from checking on everything and took a pick of a root while up there. This root is about average, some are larger and some are smaller but this was from an average 3 prong plant that is 3 year old.
