questions 12 years 1 month ago #20861

I have several questions...

I'm considering buying my lifetime nonresident hunting lisence in NC for bear hunting but, have been holding off. I've been looking on their web site to see if I can dig ginseng with this lisence but, can't find any information on it. Does anyone know if the lifetime covers nonresident diggers for sang? I'll give NC DNR a call if no one knows.

Yesterday while messing around in my seed beds I noticed that one the bud stem on one of my huge 4 prongs that was broke off this summer when the cows got through the fence has started to turn green and is about an inch long. What if anything will this do to the plant if the stem keeps growing?

Since my larger trees were struck by lighting and died I have to much sun hitting my seed patch at the critical hours around noon. Will it hurt if I put elevated piles of limbs and debis over them for shade until I can get some fast growing maple shade treeds started?

Hunter,
I am going to step out on a limb and try to give an answer to some of your thoughts.
1: I don't think you have to have a license to dig ginseng in N.C. You do have to have a permit to dig in the National Forest and I don't think your lifetime non-resident hunting license will cover that.
2: If the bud stayed under the soil during the summer, it may start growing a new plant. I think that will depend upon the damage and whether it was exposed to air for a long time. The root will probably start making a new bud spur and start in another year. This may take a couple of years.
3: I had the same thing to happen this past year and I have an open spot that is allowing too much sun to get through. I have started new trees but it will take a few years for them to get large enough to provide the needed shade. I am planning to plant butterfly bushes on the upper side of the rows of seng and maybe a few Black Cohosh planted around them to give the needed shade until the trees fill in the space needed. You can substitute any number of fast growing plants that will serve the purpose or use military camo sheets tied to trees or stakes. Good luck.

HUnter-

I'm pretty sure that the NC Wildlife Resources commission doesn't cover lic for digging 'sang. It does cover Bear hunting.... as well as lot of hunting, fishing, trapping and also makes policy on on wildlife disease states.

wildlife resources commission website: www.ncwildlife.org/Hunting/SeasonsLimits/201213DeerSeasons.aspx

I would suggust that you go to the NC Dept Of Ag and look there. These are the folks that cover grower's lic, and 'sang dealers permits, and also do the soil testing.
