I have done very well at times on private land and National Forest land but some of my best sangin was done on property owned by the University of West Virginia. They owned a large track of land about 15 miles from my' home and we were allowed to hunt (both Ginseng and Game) on it. It bordered both private lands and National Forest lands and was littered with Black Bears. You could walk the old logging roads on the property and Ginseng was growing all over the place both above and below the roads. There were so many Black Bear that roamed the property on a regular basis that there was literally fresh or a fw days old Bear poop every 5 to 10 feet on the logging roads, quite a bit above and below the roads and scattered through the wooded ridges and hollows. The reason I did so well finding seng may have been because most other sangers were afraid to go onto the property due to the Black Bears! During the many times and quite a few years that I hunted seng and game on the property, I never oncs saw a Black Bear. However, there were also a lot of Ruffed Grouse on the property and because of the abundance of Bear sign, I would nearly crap my' pants everytime I flushed a Grouse!

I hunt mostly private land...

Best hunt I ever had was in a hollow that was sort of remote and the ridges on both sides had been clear cut (10-15 years earlier) and planted in pines.

The hollows were not cut, and still had good timber in them.

It was a mess to get into the place because the pines were thick, lots of briars and underbrush.

But once we got in there the hollow was perfect. Had rocky, sandy loam soil, and along the slick rock creek, large rock outcroppings on both sides of the main hollow. No one had been in there for quite a long time hunting seng because it was all over the place. We found several large patches of big 4 prongs and at one time dug seng for at least 2 hours without ever looking for another plant. While you were digging one, you could see 2-3-4 more.

Me and my partner brought out 6 lbs 3 oz of green seng that day.

It was a hunt to remember for sure !
