HOW CLEAN 12 years 1 month ago #20279

Hey just wanted to get your all opinion on how clean do you get your seng roots.Ive seen people use tooth brushes and ive seen some just rub most of the dirt off and leave a little dirt in the rings for character, and do you think it effects the price you get for it when selling it?

If to clean can resemble tame seng .So best be easy on your roots.

here is a good example of too clean. I blasted them with the garden hose, and they came really clean :(. Now I soak in water for 5 minutes to soften the dirt and rub it with mu fingers. A toothbrush helps, but don't scrub or make it very clean, just knock the dirt off...IME

Don't use a brush of any kind. Just soak them for about 5 minutes, wipe what dirt you can with just your fingers, shake them off and you are done. I'm a buyer, and every buyer I know will tell you the same thing. Don't get them too clean.

If you follow 5prong's advice, you will never go wrong! Bssides, it is not like it is going out on a date, so leave it scruffy just like us old Mountain Folk.:P

Most of the time all you really need to do is soak it a little while in water, and use a hose to spray it clean. I would not use a jet spray type nozzle... but just a regular garden hose type sprayer.

You don't want to damage the roots, just want to get \"most\" of the dirt off.

Me personally I am OK with leaving a little dirt to show in the rings (like the example below).

I have never had a buyer complain that my roots were too dirty.

Now occasionally you will dig some roots in a really sticky soil and you may have to give a few of them extra attention to get most of the dirt off. I usually just rub it off with my fingers in cases like that.

You don't want to break the skin on the root, or break off the root hairs. So be very careful about that.

Just a Senging...

Those are some middle TN (around the bottom of a) limestone bluff roots.

Prime stuff - fat and bulby !

Every time I find seng growing in a location like that the roots look really good, very good growth rings, nice root hair, and some serious bulb going on.
