Just A Senging,

I am not an expert and probably shouldn't give advice on possible treatments for these type of roots but here goes. First, I would brush off all or as much mold as possible with a small brush or even toothbrush, then (and I am not sure about this) wash the roots vigorously in clean fresh water and remove any remaining mold if possible. Rinse again then quickly dry the roots with a blow dryer. Once done, follow the instructions on how to dry Bloodroot at the following website to properly dry Bloodroot: www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/hort/hil/hil-134.html

If you have gotten rid of the mold, you should know in a day or so! Hopefully someone with expert knowledge will chime in and tell you how to remove the mold and keep it off!

The only other possibility I can think of that should remove the mold is a very light solution of unscented Clorox or other Bleach in water. Quickly run the roots through the solution, rinse with clean fresh water several times, then dry with a blow dryer. After this, again follow the instructions at the above website. I do not know if this technique would be frowned upon but the roots would not be soaked in the solution, just quickly washed in it to kill the mold then rinsed several times with clean fresh water.

the only thing you can do is get the visible mold off of them and get them good and dry. treating them with any chemicals seems unethical since they are sold for human consumption. Mold spores are microscopic, and chemical treatments will kill the organism(maybe, depending on what you use) but there will still be spores there it won't kill and until they are bone dry, it will come back. Vhe moral thin to do would be toss them in the trash, you wouldn't want to be sold moldy roots would you?

I understand what you are saying! However, Bleach is Chlorine and Chlorine is used to treat the water we drink and Bleach is recommended to treat water in survival situations. Chlorine (which is known to kill mold) also degrades and pretty much dissipates with time and especially when subjected to durect sunlight. I may be wrong but how could a light chlorine to water solution that is quickly rinsed off but also degrades and/or dissipate be harmful for human consumption?

Anytime we have to get into the well it gets a good dose of bleach.

I would look up any GAP (good agricultural practices) and maybe search for postharvest handling of other specialty crops. I know in the fruit vegetable industry they will sanitize handling equipment, etc, but not so sure on the crops themselves.

I think prevention is key.

Kyjabber is right, prevention is the key. Dry your roots in a controlled environment and keep them there after they are dried. (inside with temp at least 72 degrees good air flow and low humidity) a little warmer is better for both drying and storing, but don't get them too warm (above 100 degrees is too warm).

Once they are completely dry store them in a cardboard box or paper bag. Stay away from plastic containers they need to \"breath\" a little.
