Nice Pics there Billy... Thanks for sharing.

I know some places where goldenseal patches run 200' up the hill and 50-60' wide. Nice big plants too. I tried digging it a time or two back in my younger days, but found it was not near as fun as hunting seng - heck you did not have to hunt it, all you did was dig it for hours on end. Tooooo much like work !!! If it went for 100.00/lb that would probably change my mind :-)

Talk about work, I got started in the garden early this morning. Got tomatoes, sweet corn, green and yellow squash and cucumbers planted today. I have watermelon and cantelope seedlings that I am going to try to get in the ground in the next few days.

I have lettuce, snow peas and potatoes growing already and looking good. Been eating on the lettuce a while now and the snow peas are blooming, won't be long on them now.

My plum trees are loaded this year, both of them, and my peach and apple trees look like they are going to make a decent crop too.

Making me hungry talking about all this good food.

You all have a Great Weekend !

Billy

I agree it's nice to see those old familiar plants again each spring.

I notice a few Solomons seal and false solomons seal just starting to push out of the ground. along with a few trillium. To most people they would not recognize them because their not fanned out completly.

I also saw three little three year old ginseng plants just starting to bend out of the ground. They are the very first of many thousands that will emerge this spring.

It nice to be able to walk through the woods and be able to name all the plants.

Thanks for sharing those pics from KY!

Tn lol you have made me hungry reading that man o man sounds like a great gardin and all the trees doing well is no less than excellent. You are right the yellow root patches are very big when no one has dug them in along time.

I found a nice wild patch of ginseng out walking today there is one grandpa 4 prong that is already beautiful sitting above all the rest.It is in a thicket and there are near 40 offspring to the right, left and down the hill,of whitch about 20 will be diggers. This is a new spot that i was out scouting in and digging a little bit of bloodroot for my wife she had got a wart and you can break a peace of bloodroot in half and apply the orange liqud to a wart andf repeat that 3 times and the old wart will get gone :) Anyway am looking forward to hunting this new spot this year it is only about a 20 minute 4 wheller ride from the house and i had never checked that area before.

I can sometimes imagine how it must have looked many years ago up a bank where ginseng had grown untouched for a century :)

classicfur it is nice to be able to name the plants and is also a blessing to us there is never a time that i do not thank the Lord for all that he has giving us it is truly a wonderful planet that we live on and the way nature was sit up is astonishing to me.

That does sound good TN, cant wait for those cucumbers and ripe tomatoes myself. This time of year, any kind of fresh greens with some salt, pepper, green onions and bacon grease is my kinda eatin, top that off with some mashed potatoes, pintos, fried bread and pork chops....To me that's as good as it comes.

Billy,
I think that alot, what I would give to have walked this country when it was fresh and undug...It would have been amazing! We are all fortunate to live in this part of the world that we do and I consider myself lucky. Most folk don't understand the lure of the woods as we enjoy.
Many Saturday evenings I'll return a little before dark from digging and stop at a little store on my way home. Usually Im filthy, scratchin from a tick or chigger bite, and have sweat my close wet many times that day. The owner always asks why in the world I waste a day off to go through all that. Iv never tried to explain it to him, I just always tell him it isn't for everyone. He is much older than I and if he doesn't know already, I probably couldn't make him understand.

Great photos of the plants, Billy-

I spend the weekend in the Linville Gorge [near Boone NC] and saw many of the same plants. We camped x 2 nights on the forest service road on the west rim. Got in kinda late on Friday night, so got the camp ready and didn't look around too much then. However, sat am, got up and realized that right next to where we camped there was a approx 100' x20' of wild bleuberries growing there. We went hiking sat and saw many of the same plants and even two wild 'sang plants . These were both growing beautifully there within 30' feet of each other.

TN- I goota get busy like you did w/ garden summer crops. The spirng garden has been up for some time now, and I'm giving lettuce away at work. I'm looking forward to seeing tomatoes up!
