I'm in s.w. PA and have been hunting ginseng for about a year.
I see a lot of pictures of big 2 ft. high and bigger sang but all I ever find is under a foot.
Even found a 4 prong today but they all seem the same size. What's up with that?
I had a old timer tell me the Biggest root he ever found was under a two prong. He 92 now and still going.take care and watch out for the snakes, good luck.
Something is moving or eating the seed. Turkeys, squirrel, chipmunks, deer. I went out today and found 2 new spots with a little of everything. This one spot had about 20 plants within a square yard.
Even if you do not dig the roots this year make sure you spend some time planting the berries. Maybe that may help sprout them before the critters get them.

I tend to think it is the ground an the area in which you found them. I've ran into a few places that always seem to have small stocks there. Now sometimes the roots were very nice tho an then other times a very small root for such a nice 4 prong.
