TOPIC: Something On Stem???

I found this seng today while digging on public land.. Normally I wouldnt dig an immature plant but I had to check this one out... It has a woody like sleeve \"for lack of a better definition\" growing from the neck of root and up the stalk.. Thought maybe you more experienced growers/diggers might know what this is.. Thought it maybe diseased or sometype of fungus. I have the plant temporarily stored in the fridge.. Do I need to transplant it back or throw it away?

That is really unusual - never seen that before.

Was there a bud spur at the bottom ? can't see one in the pic.

It almost looks like the root neck went freaky and grew up the stem.

I've seen this a couple of times. Whatever that is has grown seperate from the stem. It actually is like a sleeve and will slide right off the stem if you break the top of the plant off. At least that is how it was with the ones that I've seen. I don't have a clue what it is though. when I first saw one like that I took a double take at the top. I was like Ginseng doesn't have a woody stem, lets look at the top again LOL.
