TOPIC: 2012 Indiana ginseng season

2012 Indiana ginseng season 12 years 1 month ago #20568

Im from SW Indiana and my season hasn't been what it normally is on average. I'm sure it is due to the extreme drought and heat from this past summer. I have only been able to find seng in the deepest darkest ravines or under dense undergrowth and the woods I've found it in has also had water flowing in the creek beds from natural springs that never dry up. As of 4 days ago I was still finding them in good numbers with most being yellow to lime green but had still found lush green plants with ripe berries. Would love to hear from other Hoosiers or southern Illinois diggers bout how their seasons have been up until now. Thanks, Bird-Nerd

Bird,
i'm from the SW area too and i am still finding green plants and berries and at the same time the golden yellow colored ones as you mentioned. This is only my second year hunting so compared to last year its much better.

Mature hardwoods with beech, hickory, and oak tucked down in the bottoms. Its a heck of a squirrel woods too! Pretty much where ever there is full shade is generally where i've been finding it, north, south, east, west hillsides doesnt seem to matter.

Yeah same here except for today! I hunted a new woods with high hopes but didnt find a thing! Not even any dried up ones or bare stems! The heat and drought must have hit that woods hard cause you can normally find 1-2 or even a lil three leaf. But that sengin for ya u just never know what that plant will do!
